Greetings from Sue Schettler, Parish Life Coordinator
Welcome, to our parish website. St. John the Baptist Catholic Church is a wonderful parish. We are bound by a faith that reflects a commitment to a Catholic presence in the local community. God has richly blessed our faith community with good stewards and faithful servants to do His work. I hope that our website offers you a small glimpse of who we are as the Holy People of God. We continue to work to build up the Kingdom of God in our little corner of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. You are welcomed at anytime to visit us in person here in Mt. Vernon, IA. May God richly bless you!

Parish Mission Statement:
We the people of the Catholic community of St. John the Baptist,
a parish of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, gather as a Eucharist-centered community.
We are charged, by our baptism in Christ, to worship, live and share the word of God in holiness.
We are called to lifelong faith formation. We are committed to the loving service of all God’s creation through acts of mercy, justice and stewardship.
The Catholic community of St. John the Baptist serves the needs of people from the Lisbon, Mt. Vernon, and rural Cedar Rapids, Ely, and Springville areas. The parish has a membership of approximately 400 households or about 1,400 souls. The parish offers mass each weekend on Sundays and one daily mass each Friday. Faith Formation is held during the school year for students in grades pre-12th). In addition to our Eucharistic life and religious formation, the parish offers activities throughout the year. The parish no longer has a resident priest. In 2002 Archbishop Hanus of Dubuque appointed a Parish Life Coordinator to oversee the on-going day to day operation of the parish. An appointed priest serves the parish as sacramental priest, presiding at Eucharistic and sacramental celebrations. The parish is a vital and viable Catholic faith community, grounded in the Mission of Christ.
